The How of Tooth Decay

Posted .

Whether you like it or not, we all get cavities, no matter our age. If you have your original teeth, you could be susceptible to tooth decay. When bacteria build up on your chompers for too long, bacterial acid grows and breaks away at your enamel layers to make cavities.

Fortunately, there are some methods to lower your likelihood of developing cavities. With some discipline, you can keep these good habits to strengthen your teeth.

-Brush with toothpastes containing fluoride. Fluoride, a chemical, toughens the protective layers of your teeth, making it more difficult for bacterial acids to pierce the protective layers of your teeth. If you’re brushing twice every day, you’re flushing plaque-forming bacteria from your mouth.

-Floss once a day. When done right, flossing can be a simple way to boost your oral health. Use about a foot-and-a-half of floss per session and use fresh sections of floss for each tooth.

-Drink water with fluoride in it. Many public water supplies are fortified with fluoride, so if you’re getting your appropriate dosage of water daily, you’ll be drinking a lot of fluoride!
